Have you heard of Oberammergau ???
Once a decade, in the small Bavarian town of Oberammergau, a historical and dramatic production of the Passion Play takes place. VIDEO HERE
It was first performed in 1634 and it is the result of a vow made by the inhabitants of the village that if God spared them from the effects of the bubonic plaque then sweeping the region. they would perform a passion play every ten years. This play involves over 2000 actors, singers, instrumentalists and technicians, all residents of the village. It typically takes place every 10 years on a year that ends in a zero, the last performance was in 2010 and the next one is coming up in 2020.
The premiere of the 42nd Passion Play will be on May 16, 2020, there are 102 performances planned between May & October. They expect up to 500,000 visitors to the area during this period, with over 1/2 being International guests.
In addition to the Passion play, The village is also known as the home of a long tradition of woodcarving and is home to dozens of woodcarver shops, with pieces ranging from religious subjects, to toys, to humorous portraits.
